When it comes to bringing yoga into the classroom, finding the space and time to roll out 30 mats or getting down on the floor can be challenging for potential school yoga programs. But when we bring our yoga practice off the ground and into a chair, it becomes more accessible, more sustainable, and easier to integrate into any busy day.
Appropriate for yoga teachers working in schools, classroom teachers interested in incorporating yoga into the school day, and allied professionals such as counselors, psychologists, and occupational therapists, this workshop explores tangible, effective ways to bring yoga into the classroom without yoga mats or any other props. Together we learn to adapt and teach a variety of yoga poses, along with breathwork, meditation, and relaxation practices for students either seated in chairs or using chairs as a support. We experience a sample chair-based practice and explore activities to share with students, school staff, teachers, and administrators.
Along with reviewing current research linking movement-based practices to learning readiness, we also discuss implementation strategies for schools that support both student and teacher self-care and wellness.
Chair Yoga is a unique yoga style that adapts yoga positions and poses through creative use of a chair. The chair replaces the yoga mat and becomes an extension of the body. The student is able to warm up the body safely and perform yoga poses with more support and stability. Poses are done seated on the chair or the chair is used for support during standing poses, forward and backward bends, side extensions, balancing, and leg and arm stretches. Chair Yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions.
The teacher certification will provide you with a firm foundation for teaching Chair Yoga and will address:
- Beginner, Intermediate, and Challenging Poses & Sequences
- Postural Education and Support
- Breathwork, meditation, mindfulness and relaxation techniques ideal for the chair.
- Safety Guidelines
Please Note: Listed tuition does not include room and board at Omega. Manual costs are additional (+$20.00)
