The Safe & Sound Protocol helps you feel better, think better and connect better.

The Safe & Sound Protocol helps you regulate your nervous system, to decrease anxiety and stress. It can be beneficial for:
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
Sensory processing disorders (SPD)
Attention/deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD)
Trauma and PTSD
Social engagement problems, i.e. problems connecting with other people socially
Reading comprehension problems
Sound sensitivity following brain injury (e.g. concussion)
Gastrointestinal (GI) disruption due to nervous system overstimulation (e.g. reduction in binge eating behaviours, reduction in stress or anxiety-related diarrhea).
What is Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (known as SSP) is an auditory program that was developed to help regulate the nervous system effectively, and consistently. SSP was developed by Dr. Steven Porges, of iLS. Research and experience tell us that rapid societal change and adverse life experiences are increasingly resulting in physical and mental health challenges for many people, and SSP was developed to help you respond effectively to life’s challenges, access higher learning and cognition, and build positive social relationships.
“The notion that the brain is able to change in response to stimulation, an ability known as “neuroplasticity,” is now so widely accepted it can be called fact. Unyte-iLs programs are based on this principle, providing gentle and specific stimulation in order to activate the neural pathways used in the processing of sensory information. Neuronal connections in these pathways are strengthened and new connections are established through repeated sessions of multisensory input.” – from the IntegratedListening.com website
SSP offers a 5 to 15 hours auditory program, that will help you regulate your nervous system more effectively because it trains your neural network and nervous system. SSP uses music to create a sense of safety, by stimulating the vagus nerve, and calms the emotional and physiological state. This helps improve communication, stress and anxiety management, and social interactions.
SSP for Children and Teens
SSP is a great way to help children move through major transitions (such as starting school, moving, going on vacation) and prepare for participation in other therapeutic interventions.
SSP for Adults
Safe and Sound Protocol has had a global effect on the brain and central nervous system. As a result, it is successfully integrated into a wide variety of therapies and programs. It can include programs that improve cognitive, language and social abilities. As our brain/body connection becomes more organized, we better process the world around us and become more confident, happy and engaged.
IS SSP RIGHT FOR ME?
Ask yourself these questions to see if the Safe & Sound Protocol could be beneficial for you:
Have you tried mindfulness but can’t figure out how to turn your brain off long enough to focus, and you feel frustrated and just want to give up? SSP can help you quiet your mind and train your brain to be more focused.
Do you feel tired but can’t sleep a full night? If you’re tossing and turning, wake up exhausted, and have difficulty staying alert and relating to people the next day – there’s hope.
Do your loved ones describe you as defensive and having a short fuse, but you long for connection? Exercise helps you feel better in the short term, but the looming feelings of guilt, shame, and anger return almost immediately. You worry that if you don’t change, your marriage will end in divorce and your job will suffer.
Do you want to feel calmer, more resilient, and able to go with the flow of family and work-life? If you’re tired of feeling overwhelmed by day-to-day activities and chores and are ready to experience a sense of serenity and calm – SSP could be worth exploring.
Do you get overwhelmed and stressed being in social situations? Maybe the thought of going to a busy event makes you feel anxious. Perhaps being in a large crowd of people makes your heart race and head spin. If you’re sensitive to your surroundings, SSP can help you regulate those feelings.
Do you find it difficult to stay calm when there’s a lot of background noise? The Safe and Sound Protocol can help you manage your reactivity when there are a lot of stimuli.
Are you always on alert and tend to feel unsafe in situations that do not require you to be on alert? SSP can help bring your nervous system back to homeostasis and retrain your mind that it doesn’t need to be on constant alert.
Rather than connecting with people, do you prefer to stay away from them? It’s not necessarily that you don’t enjoy connecting with people, it’s just that being around people, particularly new people, feels too overwhelming. You deserve to feel calm and safe connecting with people, and SSP can help.
SSP PROGRAMS OFFERED BY EMBODIED WISDOM
SSP programs are for adults or children, and are facilitated through the remote listening program or in the center.
Interested participants will commit to listening to a five-hour listening intervention, depending on the discretion of the supervising provider.
Delivered either in-clinic or remotely, the client experiences the SSP through over-the-ear headphones conveniently connected to a user-friendly app. Your provider will develop a sustainable listening schedule for you, plan for activities while listenings, and monitor listening over 6 weeks.
Once clients complete the 5-hour CORE program, they will work with our team to transition into one of our maintenance programs. (if required) Clients will also learn about the science behind the program and other tools to support self-awareness and the nervous system regulation.
Additional support programs are available to support nervous system maintenance and regulation after the initial 6-week intervention but are not required.
